Yellow Chyrpy
View Full Size Image 1 Image Avaliable

An early and very beautiful example of a yellow ground 'chyrpy' or woman's mantle, circa 1850, nomadic Tekke tribe, Turkmenistan. This wonderful piece displays great age, employing a very spacious design of silk embroidery on a silk ground with stylized plant forms in a number of stunning colors. The lining is of homespun, block printed cotton. All the colors are from organic dyes and the embroidery work is extremely fine. There are condition issues due to age and wear.
