A beautiful embroidered 'chirpy' or mantle, circa 1890, nomadic Tekke group, Turkmenistan. Silk embroidery on a blue silk ground, with block printed lining and silk fringes. A wonderful example of a blue ground mantle, worn over the head of a Tekke Turkoman woman. The ground color of the 'chirpy' pieces denotes the marital status of the wearer, blue being reserved for a young, married Tekke woman. The needlework is impressive throughout, but especially fine fine on the collar. An excellent example in great condition. SOLD
