SOLD A wonderful example of traditional 'Kantha' quilting work, late 19th century, undivided Bengal, India. Cotton embroidery on a layered muslin cotton ground. This charming kantha is drawn with the local flora and fauna, depicting birds, insects, animals and various geometric and floral forms. The main border displays wonderful 'boteh' designs. The masterfully drawn center mandala is a visual delight, drawing the viewer's eye to the symbolic center of the spiritual universe. Produced from worn, discarded and recycled family garments, the handspun muslin cloths were layered for the ground material, and unravelled threads were used for the colored embroidery. A beautiful and stunning example in excellent condition. SOLD
