Antique kantha embroidery, circa 1900, undivided Bengal. This fabulous example was most likely used as a seating mat for special occasions for an honored guest. It was created by deconstucting old, worn family garments, unravelling the threads, layering the muslin ground material to give it strength, then quilting and embroidering. The center mandala is beautifiully drawn, while the borders frame add balance to the piece. There is a small, old repair in the lower left, which is much more apparent in the photo than in the flesh.
