Very rare antique Arabachi Turkmen Chapan, 19th century, Upper Amu Darya, Turkmenistan. Now resides in the Cleveland Museum of Art. Silk embroidery on homespun, indigo dyed cotton. One of maybe fourteen known from this group. Some refer to these chapans as being made by the Karakalpak group, but I have found no evidence of that. This amazing example was purchased from us and gifted to the museum by Arlene Cooper. Thank you, Arlene! Many generations may now enjoy its beauty.
