SOLD A rare 'main carpet' circa 1880 or before, Timuri Baluch group, Western Afghanistan. The wonderful piece was used for special occasions in the black nomadic tents of the Timuri subtribe. The weaver or weavers were obviously influenced by the neighboring Turkoman tribes, the Ersari in particular, as the weavers seem to have 'lifted' one of their tribal emblems, the 'gulli gul'. The design elements below the 'guls' I've heard referred to in Afghanistan as 'kalamdan' or needlecase, a silver box the woman carried around her neck to keep her embroidery needles. There are rements of magenta silk, now corroded, in the white center flower. I purchased this wonderful 'main carpet' from Mustafer 'Musso' Kaplin, RIP, a number of years ago in Istanbul. I've never seen another like it. Also to be noted are the elborate kilim end finishes. SOLD
