A beautiful antique Shirvan rug, circa late 19th century, Shirvan district, Eastern Caucasus. This piece displays many strong motifs in varying shades of indigo, madder red, yellows, greens, teal and ivory. The two medallion format is often seen in soumakh work from Shirvan and Kuba districts. Also on display is a very nice rendition of a stepped main border which surrounds the field. There are areas of wear and corrosion, and a little loss to each end, but the piece still retains it powerful presence and wonderful rich color combination. Great for a wall or low traffiked area.
