Rugs & Bags | Antique Khamseh Bag Face
This is a very early example of either a Basseri Khamseh or Afshar bag face, circa 1850 or before, SW Persia. I keep going back and worth between the two groups concerning attribution. It displays a wonderful serrated leaf design seen in weavings by both these tribal groups. The field is compartmented into four vertical rows of tree or plant forms, placed on a ground of wonderfully rich indigo blue. The piece was woven with at least eight different colors, from clear yellow to a deep mahogany. The wool is soft and silky. Please see photos for condition, as there is loss all around to the edges, and some holes. What it lacks in condition is certainly made up for in quality of dyes and wool, and its arcahic and truly nomadic feel. A splendid example, older than most. The dimensions are 29"wd x 25"ht.
