A wonderful example of an antique Saj Balugh Kurdish rug made around 1850, Kurdistan, Northwest Persia. Lozenges, palmettes, stylized floral motifis and what are referred to at times, flames. There is an ancient zoroastrian culture which dates back millennia in the area, so the representation of a flame is entirely feasible. This beautiful rug has sculpted itself with age. All colors are derived from natural substances. The the naturally dyed blues, madder reds and yellows being near full pile, whereas the browns have corroded in places to the foundation due to the iron shavings used as a mordant for that color. A very collectable example with very good age. SOLD
