Embroidery India/Pakistan | Semi-Antique Kutch Toran
This is a very beautiful 'toran' embroidery, circa 1930's, Kutch area of Gujurat, India. It measure 24" wd. x 13". This example is older than most, which can be detemined by the natural dyes that were used, the fineness and delicacy of the work, and the overall quality of the piece. This 'toran' is lovingly embroidered with both silk and cotton, on a cotton ground. It has been decorated with stylized parrots, peacocks and various floral forms, all containing auspicous symbolism. The 'toran' was hung over the door or main entrance to the home during special occasions and festivels, especially for Diwali. It is thought to attract Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, and is a blessing for any who cross under it. This is a particularly handsome example in mint condition. Price on Request
