This is a very finely embroidered 'rumal', sometimes spelled 'roomal', circa 1940's of before, Tharparkar region of Sindh, Pakistan. I believe this example is the work of the Sodha Rajput group. Rumal were embroidered by the bride to wrap gifts for the bridegroom during the wedding ceremony. It is embroidered in a very small and delicate 'pakkoh soof' stitch, a technique that the embroiderer employs by counting threads and working from the backside of the ground cloth. Small mica mirrors are held in place by a buttonhole stitch. The design is quite wonderful showing opposing peacocks, representing the coming together of newlyweds, stylized mountains around the exterior, and plant forms. The colors appear to all be from organic sources. The condition is very good, with the exception of a small tear near the edge on one side, and missing a number of small fringes that were used to decorate the edges. The dimensions are 14" x 14.5".
