This is a very beautiful antique embroidered and quilted 'kantha', circa early 20th century, undivided Bengal, Northeast India. This charming example has been embroidered with recycled and layered muslin cotton cloth and colored threads taken from old family saris and dhoti, the traditional clothing worn by women and men in this area of India. As nothing went to waste in these humble communities, their old garments, no longer suitable for wear, were re-purposed into  sleeping quilts, floor spreads, seating mats, valuables bags and coverlets. In that way, part of the family history would be kept alive for future generations. This pieces displays a wonderful grid containing floral forms, a beautifully colorful center mandela and boteh motifs embroidered in each corner. It also has an inscription which is most likely a prayer or blessing for the family from which it came. The condition is very good, with only some very light staining. The dimensions are 65" x 35wd. A wonderful and collectable example. Kantha of this age, condition and quality are now quite difficult to find. Price on Request
