Mochi Skirt detail
View Full Size Image 1 Image Avaliable

SOLD A detail of a beautiful antique example of 'Mochi' embroidery from Kutch, Gujarat, India. This length of hand embroidered silk would have been used in the making of a woman's skirt. It is decorated with extremely fine silk embroidery on a silk ground material. All dyes are organic. It displays a repeated design of peacocks and floral forms. The lower border shows parrots and a fanned floral bouquet. Mochi embroidery is known as the cobbler's stitch, as the embroiderer work's with a shoemaker's awl or 'aal', which was originally intended for use by cobblers. The women and men of Saurashtra, Kutch, perfected this technique, which has now become a lost art. This is a detail of a beautiful fragment which measures over 5' long. There is some staining, corrosion and wear due to age, but still a magnificent and rare example. Contact us for complete and further detailed images as well as dimensions of this piece. SOLD
