A beautiful example of a man's wedding shawl, known as a 'maleer', circa early 20th century, Diplo area, Tharparkar, Sindh Province, Pakistan. Silk embroidery on handwoven, resist dyed printed cotton ground. Two lengths of material were joined with a silk interlacing stitch, and each end embroidered with floral forms and symbolic corner motifs, representing happiness and fertility. There shawls are embroidered by the bride, and given to the groom when she arrives at the groom's home for the wedding ceremony. This is a beautiful example in excellent condition. The literature suggests these men's shawls were commissioned by the Lohana group to Meghwar embroiderers. The work is fantastic. A small split bottom left of the field, otherwise excellent condition.
