This rare and wonderfully embroidered 'kantha' dates to circa 1900, West Bengal, India. It displays a number of human figures, horses, various birds and peacocks, fish and five mandalas. It was made from old, discarded family saris and men's dhoti. The garments were deconstructed, unravelling the treads for embroidery, and the plain muslin cotton for the base material. Then, after layering for strength, the pieces were quilted and the colored threads used to create this wonderful seating mat. Nothing went to waste in these humble villages, for what was once discarded, became a stunning work of art. Excellent condition and wonderful, soft handle. Price on Request
