Embroidery India/Pakistan | Vintage Embroidered 'Boukhani'
A vintage embroidered bridegroom's sash or 'boukhani', 2nd half, 20th century, Rabari group, Kutch, Gujarat, India. The dimensions are 67" x 6". This vintage sash is embroidered with various geometric motifs, desert flowers and two peacocks. These auspicious birds are symbols of guidance, purity and protection in India. Note the interesting color change at each end of the ground material. The embroidery in done in polychrome cotton and adorned with mica mirrors to ward off evil spirits. There is a varity of embroidery stitches employed, one being a beautiful interlaced herringbone or 'hermitch' stitch. The colors appear to be from organic sources. This is a nice example in excellent condition. Price on Request
