This is a 'pulia' produced by one of the Banjara groups, mid 20th century, Madhya Pradesh, Central India. This piece appears to have been made by the Vanjara Bhil group. The work is very fine cotton embroidery in brick stitch technique and is made into the shape of a 'pulia'. These were used to cover a woman's neck when hauling water from the local well. The backing appears to be of a more recent undyed cotton with a seam horizontally across the center. The dimensions are approx; 11" x 9" without the cowries. The age is uncertain on this piece, though it is extremely fine, very decorative and an interesting study piece. The condition is excellent. Price on Request
