This a wonderful example of a folding dowry bag, circa 1930's to 40's, Banjara community, Madhya Pradesh, Central India. This type of folding bag is sometimes referred to as a bread bag. This beautiful example exhibits three main embroidery stitches, a running stitch, raised satin stitch and a cretin stitch. Cowrie shells embellish one side. All the colors appear to be from organic sources, and they are soft yet saturated. The condition of this pieces is good, although it does have a minor slit about 1" long on the back which has been stitched closed. The dimensions are 24" x 14". A nice collectable example.
