A very handsome cotton applique and embroidered square cloth, possibly once a pillow, circa mid 20th century or before, Banjara community, Madhya Pradesh, Central India. This example was created by opposing red and blue squares, each containing white applique designs and embroidered with brick stitch zigzags and diamonds. The embroidery is very finely done displaying at least five colors. It appears this piece was once used as a pillow face. The cotton is very soft and has a wonderful patina and handle due to use. The piece measures 15" x 15". The overall condition is very nice though the edges are rough. Price on Request
