An old and quite beautiful 'pulia' or neck cover, applique and embroidery work, circa 1940's or possibly before, Banjara community, Madhya Pradesh, Central India. This handsome example is decorated with a wonderful, absract design. The field in red and white, the borders in white and blue. The colors all appear to be from natural dye stuffs such as indigo and madder. The embroidery is super fine, and one must look closely to even see it. The condition is good considering the age and use, though there is some light wear and loss, and its missing some cowries and tassels. The piece measures 14" x 9" without the tassels and cowries.
