A very rare antique embroidered ceremonial coverlet, circa 2nd half 19th century, Banjara community, Madhya Pradesh, Central India. This example is certainly one of the oldest Banjara textiles I've handled or seen. The use of wool and silk embroidery in this textile is very rare, and dates this example well into the 19th century. This type of square cloth was embroidered by the bride to wrap gifts for the groom at the time of marriage. This example has a number of rough areas, darns, patches and wear, but it is a unique, beautiful and collectable embroidery despite it's condition. The design is eccentric and archaic, and the colors are wonderful, being derived from organic dyes. There are still a number of cowrie shells attached to the exterior. The dimensions are 23" x 24".
