A rare and very finely embroidered woolen compartmented shoulder bag, circa 2nd half 19th century, Bankara community, Karnataka, South India. This is certainly one of the oldest Banjara bags I've seen, embroidered in wool, which alone is a sign of great age, as well as being produced with all natural dyes. The work is outstanding displaying sections of kinetic motifs which are repeated on both sides. The colors are rich and clear, and the wool has a wonderful patina due to age and use. There are two inner compartments, most likely used for storing the accroutrements of 'paan' or betelnut. The strap does not appear original to the bag, though it is quite handsomely embroidered and has small pieces of lead attached. The bag itself has been decorated with lead tassels in the lower middle and each lower corner. It is a rare and lovely piece in very nice condition considering its age. The bag measures 9" x 9" without the strap and tassels. Price on Request
