Textiles of the Banjara | Antique Banjara 'Gala Phulia'
This is a very nice antique 'gala phulia' set, circa early 20th century, Lambani Banjara community, probably Madhya Pradesh, Central India. This complete example shows beautiful workmanship, wonderful colors and is in very nice condition. The cotton embroidery is soft and supple, with an excellent patina due to age and use. It was an important item to cushion and help balance the water pot when the women of the tribe brought water each day from the well. This is a fine example of ethnographic art which surives intact from this wandering nomadic group. The cross stitch embroidery displays not only the skill of the maker, but the tribes expertise of natural flora to create the dyes. The nape cover measures approx; 8" x 6" and the ring about 4" diameter. Price on Request
