Textiles of the Banjara | Antique Banjara Dowry Bag
This is a very fine example of a bridegroom's folding dowry bag, circa 1900, probably Lambani Banjara group, Karnataka, South India. This type of folding bag is known as a 'supari' bag, as it is for holding areca catehu, the mild stimulent also known as paan. It displays equisite work, design and artistry. It is beautifully embroidered and appliqued, using all natural colors from organic sources; such as madder root, esparak, as well as a wonderful indigo based green. Another indication of great age is the use of aubergine, rarely seen after the turn of the 20th century. Chips of mica were also used to reflect the evil eye for protection of the groom. This beautiful bag measures 15" x 7". A fine collectable example in nice condition for its age. Price on Request
